This is approx. 18 km from Banjul in Bakoteh. It is a place that’s supports children. SOS provides day-care, education, and medical services. It is a vocational training centre. Their aim is to support existing family ties and help help children who are risk of losing parental care to grow up in a family of their own.

Hart House School for disabled children
Hart House is a school for disabled children. There are 26 or so children who attend this school. They go on Monday morning and stay until Friday. It has been open since 2001. It was opened by Geoff Hunwicks a British National and his wife. There is no charge to the children to attend and relies on supporters who donate money. It is a purpose built house completed in 2002. The school is well worth a visit the children are always pleased to see visitors.

Kunta Kinteh Island formerly called James Island and St Andrews Island is an island in the river Gambia. Here you will see historic remnants of the slave era. It includes Guns, Batteries and dungeons all set amid some old baobab trees. Kunta Kinteh Island was awarded a World Heritage Site in 2003. Hundreds of
thousands of slaves departed here for the new world. To visit this island we would take a boat from Banjul to Barra. This would be a 1 day trip.

This is a day trip to on the River. We travel to Banjul to Denton bridge where we get on a boat and go on the river. From the boat you can swim in the river or you can do some fishing. On board the boat you can bring your ingredients on board and cook on the charcoal fire. This is a very relaxing day on the river.

Lamin Lodge is a common lodge in Gambia in a place called Lamin. Lamin is on the banks of the River 
Gambia. There is an Oyster Farm where a guide will tell you all about the farm. The women collect
the Oysters from the Mangroves which are all along the sides of the river. There are some impressive Baobab Trees. These Trees grow in 32 African countries. They can reach up to 30 metres high and have an enormous circumference. They provide shelter; food in the form of the fruit which is a large brown/green fruit which has lots of black pips in. The fruit is often put in drinks and is good for your health. It is very rich in vitamin C and Calcium Magnesium and Potassium. The trees provide water for animals and humans. The Baobab Trees at Lamin are also known as Elephant trees as if you look at some of the branches high up you can see the form of an elephants head and trunk.

The trunk of the trees can also look like the legs of an elephant. At Lamin Lodge you can get a boat ride along the river which takes you along the mangroves where you can see the oysters. The boat trip
takes you to a place that has a very special Baobab tree which has a 2 sided elephants head on one of the branches. It also is hollow and you can get  inside the tree which is a great experience.

Kartong snake farm is located south of Gambia and takes 1 hour to drive from the hotel district. Here you will find a wide variety of reptiles, such as turtles, alligators, chameleons, and of course snakes. All kinds of snakes from egg eating snakes to cobras and pythons can be seen here. At Kartong you don’t just get to see the reptiles but hold them as well. A specialist guide will take you around and educate you on all the different breeds on the farm. This is an excellent experience for reptile lovers as you get to touch and handle the animals which is something not done in many other zoo’s around the world.

Fathala is a large animal reserve where you can see lions, giraffes, antelopes, zebras, Rhino’s and others. This tour can be done in a day if we set off early and the ferry across the river is running well. Once across the river it is a 2 hour journey to the reserve where you transfer to jeeps for a trip around the reserve to see the animals. One (1) day trip
